All females should be trained in martial arts - major deterrent to male violence & sexual abuse - your ideas?
Ideally this would begin as soon as young girls can crawl, gradually teaching according to their age capabilities and desterity, muscular control and so forth. It would be an incoporation of many different martial arts such as Karate, Kung Fu, Ninjutsu, Taekawndo, Aikido, Muay Thai, and work with weapons including spontaneous knife defence and so on. Continue this for at least until the females are legally adults and imagine the greater confidence and self-esteem, fitness and health they will have, not to mention the very thought in most guy's heads of trying to attack a girl or woman physically, sexually etc should be much reduced, as should the number of attacks and the number of attacks where the man or male doesn't come out of it worse i.e., in hospital or with a toe tag laying in the morgue.

- unless we become a dictatorship this will never happen. besides, what about the fact that you could potentially be heightening murder capita? try looking at basic laws of our democracy.
- The best defense - run away. If a female tries martial arts on me, I've also had extensive training. I'm 6 feet tall & 220 pounds. A woman of equal ability who is 5 foot 6 inches tall & 120 pounds will get her ass kicked if she goes up against me, execpt....I'm a nice guy. There is ALWAYS someone better, bigger, heavier, faster, stronger, meaner, etc. Martial arts training helped me learn discipline & control. But I haven't used it seriously in over 10 years.
- Building their self-esteem is the key, I think. Women with hight self esteem are less likely to be victims. Any way you do it - be it martial arts training or something else.
- Although I agree with whole heartiness that females should be taught self defense if ever an occassion arrises where they need to use it, but if every female started to do martial arts, although it does teach disipline, there are always going to be rebels in the world, what's going to stop the females turning around and attacking innocent males? Yes self defense should be taught, but I don't think that they should have to rely on knowing how to use a weapon.
- it isn't the training of self defense it is the confidence that comes from the training that is the true deterrent. It gives you confidence and that is expressed in your eye contact and your posture and how you walk. predators look for the unconfident and meek they are easier targets than a woman that walks tall and proud and UNAFRAID. I think all women should have some kind of training just my opinion
- While idea of being able to defend themselves will probably be a good thing, and it will probably prevent some crime, the idea that it will significantly reduce the violence against women are not realistic. What will likely happen is, the attack against women get far more violent and vicious. Remember, you are dealing with criminals, not ordinary citizens. Also, martial arts are usuless against most modern weapons such as knifes, guns, etc. that are often used in commission of these crimes. The criminals will likely resort to using them much more quickly. Plus, unless one is an expert, they can easily be over-powered when attached by a larger person or multiple persons. It only happens in movies where small woman single-handedly takes down dozen men with knifes. I am not against your idea. It will probably prevent some crime. However, it may be offset by some who become over-confident and take more risks. It will very unlikely prevent any of the more violent and serious crimes.
- I couldn't agree with you more! I have 2 grandaughters and wish desparately that I could convince my daughter of this! Unfortunately , we live in a sick socirty and come to think of it , males should be trained as well. Attackers attack for different reasons.
- i agree 100%. i have read about congo and in brazil, where many many women are raped daily. children and babies even. it pisses me off so bad. how a man could do that. i wish the thing would fall off if that happened.... 3 % of killers are women.. what does that tell you.. maybe we should inject them all with some estrogen...lol.. ....
- Better yet, let's start training our young boys that it is wrong to hit women! Let's start bringing back family values. Let's start encouraging fathers to set a good example of how daddy treats mommy. Let parents be role models of love and respect so that their children do not grow up to become perpetrators and victims! Strong values come from strong families who pass down those same values to their children.
- It is a wonderful idea! The oriental martial arts that teaches self-control are the best. Children learn to avoid violence, to help the weaker ones, to respect the older ones and to love peace. They learn how to breath better, how to develop a good posture. The practice of these martial arts combats laziness and cures many diseases. The students learn to be patient, they develop self-esteem; it strengthens bones, muscles, etc. It leads to body, mind and spiritual health. I be live that in Israel girls learn some martial art. There is much more to say. But I end with: Girls would be much happier (no shyness, no weakness, lots of serotonin) and would be much more respected. Go ahead with your plans!
- I think the concept of getting a bigger gun would apply here a whole generation of women learning martial arts, then the boys start doing it too, so now, its a whole country of people who know how to kill each other more easly. then one side gets a knife, then the other side gets a gun.....
- You are setting women up for disaster! The colt revolver made women the equal of men in violence dealing capacity. They do not use it, though, and for very good evolutionary reasons. Ask a female police officer the technique she uses most often dealing with potentially violent males. Men are designed to fight. The 40%, on average, upper body strength, ( superior punching ) greater height and weight, testosterone load, ect., ect., make Asian martial arts little defense. All the in-fighting techniques women need are well articulated in, " going for the soft spot ". The best deterrent is the ever improving fashioning of the justice system, not the deterrence of violence with weaker violence.
- Coming from someone who has studied Taekwondo, Kali, BJJ, FJJ and JKD... a forearm block will not stop a bullet. While I feel that everyone should be trained in martial arts to at least have a shell of defensive capability, you have to also take into consideration that A. males can have martial arts training and B. females can abuse it as much as anyone else. Do not allow yourself to fall into a false sense of security. Black belts can still get mugged.
- It's quite hard to use your karate skills when you are drunk. Seeing as 90% of rapes occur when one or both parties are under the influence of alcohol, it would make more sense to teach people responsible drinking habits than it would to teach karate.
- I totally agree I have done Kung Fu for 3 years now, and I never let a guy get in my way. It makes me feel confident because I am a really quiet and non violent person, so people stereotypically think I am weak and an easy fighting target. Therefore if i was in a real fight they would think I would be easy but in the end I would kick their as*. It gives me such a high too, because i am one of 2 girls in my class, and everyone is 25+ and I am only 16. It makes my confidence boost to know women can do just as men can, (even better ( : ). This would be a great way to show up men, in a positive, uplifting manner. Good idea, and thought!
